Avon Harmony & The Barberettes Celebrate 50 Years of Song

2025 is a landmark year for Avon Harmony A Cappella – it marks 50 incredible years of singing, sisterhood, and barbershop harmony. To celebrate this golden milestone, we knew we wanted to do something truly special. And what could be more meaningful than a collaboration with another founding chorus of LABBS (the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers)?

So, this summer, we were delighted to host The Barberettes from Reading for a joyful workshop day here in Bristol – and what a day it was! With both choruses celebrating their 50th anniversaries this year, it felt like a reunion of kindred spirits. Not only did we share a rich history, but we also shared the same passion: the unique joy of four-part harmony and the friendships it fosters.

From the moment our guests arrived, there was a real buzz in the air. The room filled with warmth, laughter, and of course, song. Over the course of the day, we worked together on two brilliant numbers: the iconic Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (which, quite perfectly, was first released in 1975 – the same year we were founded) and the infectious theme from Friends – I'll Be There For You. Both songs were chosen not just for their musical fun and challenge, but also for their themes of loyalty, connection, and shared experience – things that sit right at the heart of barbershop singing.

Our talented Musical Directors, Mary (Avon Harmony) and Emma (The Barberettes), led the workshop with boundless energy, wit, and a collaborative spirit that set the tone for the day. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and their contrasting yet complementary styles added a fresh dynamic to the learning process. It was a treat to watch them share directing duties, especially during the climactic run-through of Bohemian Rhapsody, where they conducted in a fantastic ‘tag team’ style – each jumping in to lead different sections with flair and precision.

Throughout the day, we spent time in sectionals to work on the details of each part. These smaller groups gave us a chance to connect more closely across choruses, as leads, basses, tenors, and baris shared tips, blended voices, and lifted each other up. Later, we came back together for some powerful full-chorus singing that sent shivers down our spines – that magical moment when it all clicks and the harmony locks is always unforgettable.

We also took time to perform for one another – a supportive, low-pressure space that allowed both choruses to share their unique sound and style. Applause, encouragement, and more than a few happy tears filled the room. And of course, no Avon Harmony and Barberettes event would be complete without cake – and plenty of it! Breaks between singing were filled with chatter, laughter, and delicious treats, reinforcing the sense of community and celebration that defined the day.

It was especially meaningful to sing a LABBS polecat together – a tradition within our barbershop community that reminds us of the repertoire we all share. Singing those familiar notes alongside friends old and new was a beautiful way to honour where we’ve come from and how far we've all journeyed together.

We’d like to give a heartfelt thank you to our incredible committees from both choruses for making this workshop possible. From planning and logistics to making sure the tea was flowing and the hall was welcoming, their work behind the scenes made the day run seamlessly. It’s not easy to bring two full choruses together, but their commitment to creating something memorable paid off in every smile, song, and shared slice of cake.

And this celebration is only the beginning! As we look ahead to the LABBS Convention later this year and our very own 50th Anniversary Concert, we’re feeling inspired, energised, and more connected than ever. The voices may change, the songs may evolve, but the heart of our chorus – and our love for making music together – stays strong.

Here's to 50 years of harmony, and to the next 50 yet to come. We’ll be there for each other – with jazz hands at the ready!
