Can’t Read Music, Can’t Breathe from Nerves? Come On In!
Let’s start with the hardest part: walking through the door.
We know how big a deal that is.
It doesn’t matter how friendly a group says they are – stepping into a room full of strangers who already know the songs, know each other, and seem like they’ve been doing this forever? That takes courage.
So if you’re reading this as someone who’s just taken that step (or thinking about it) – we see you, and we’re already proud of you.
Learning barbershop and a cappella harmony can feel like learning a new language. Four parts weaving together, no sheet music in hand, and a new way of singing that might be completely unfamiliar. At first, your brain will be working harder than your voice. And yes, it might feel like you’re the only one who’s not “getting it.”
But here’s the truth: every single person in this chorus felt like that at some point.
The magic happens not because anyone is born knowing how to sing barbershop – it happens because we keep coming. We show up. We practise. We laugh at our mistakes. And over time, it starts to stick.
Outside of rehearsal, you’ll have access to your part tracks – simple recordings you can sing along with at home, in the car, or while making tea. You don’t need to read music, and you don’t have to learn it all at once. Just little by little, week by week.
You’ll be amazed at what your voice can do when you give it the chance.
One year from now, the music that feels impossible today could be your favourite warm-up. You’ll know the names, the in-jokes, and you’ll probably be helping the next new person through the door.
It just starts with coming back. Each week, each rehearsal, even when you feel unsure. Especially then.
We’re not a choir of professionals. We’re a chorus of brave, joyful women who support each other, lift each other up, and create something beautiful together – voices and hearts in harmony.
So if your hands shake the first time you walk in… that’s okay. We’ve all been there. And we’ll be right here to meet you with a smile, a cuppa, and all the encouragement you need.
With love,
Avon Harmony A Cappella
Strong, supportive, and singing in four-part harmony – one note at a time.
